This 2700 Mile Train Journey Is the Most Beautiful in North America

Most people fly across North America without thinking twice about what is passing underneath them. The California Zephyr makes a strong case for slowing that down completely. Running from Chicago all the way to San Francisco this train covers terrain that no highway or flight path comes close to matching. Anyone who has done it will tell you the journey itself was the point all along.

Chicago to San Francisco

The direction starts in Chicago and ends in Emeryville just outside of San Francisco and saves about 2700 miles in about 52 hours. Two and a half days of moving through the heart of the continent with a view the whole way.

The Rockies Are the Highlight

Crossing the Rocky Mountains through Colorado is the stretch most passengers stay awake for. The train winds through canyons and climbs through passes that look completely different from anything visible by road.

Observation Car Changes Everything

The double decker observation car with wraparound glass ceiling is where most passengers spend their daylight hours. Sitting up there through the mountain sections specifically is the kind of experience people talk about for years afterward.

Desert Through Utah and Nevada

After the Rocky Mountains, the landscape transitions to the extreme deserts of Utah and Nevada. Spacious, peaceful, almost otherworldly in place and quite unlike anything in Colorado parts that came just hours earlier.

Sleeping Car Worth the Upgrade

Coach seats are available but a sleeping car roomette changes the whole trip. Private space, meals included in the dining car, and an actual bed to sleep in while the country moves past outside the window.

Dining Car Is a Real Experience

Sit down meals served at actual tables with strangers who become conversation partners for a few hundred miles. The food is straightforward but the social experience of the dining car is something that does not exist anywhere else in modern travel.

Sierra Nevada Finish

The very last stretch through California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains before losing out near the bay is undoubtedly a dramatic end to the journey, with snowy peaks giving way to untried valleys as the Pacific approaches.

Small Towns Along the Way

The Zephyr stops at places most people never visit by any other means. Small western towns with their own characters and histories visible for a few minutes from the platform before the train moves on.

Best Seats on the Train

Upper level of the observation car on the right side heading westbound gives the best views through the Colorado canyon sections. Worth settling in early on that stretch to get a good position.

Late Night Crossing of the Plains

Illinois and Iowa pass overnight for westbound passengers which is honestly fine. The Great Plains are better experienced as the gentle rhythm that puts people to sleep before the mountains arrive in the morning.

Budget Options Exist

Coach tickets are genuinely affordable and make the journey accessible without the sleeping car cost. Bringing food, a good book, and noise canceling headphones makes coach very manageable for the full distance.

Book Early

Sleeping car rooms sell out months ahead especially in summer and fall. Coach seats stay available longer but good window seats on the observation car fill up fast once boarding begins at each stop.
