Illinois – Brownies
Dense chocolate frames that come from Chicago cuisine that has become one of the most copied desserts in the world.
Texas – Frito Pie
Peppered corn chips on top. Texas made it, Texas owns it, and anyone who grew up eating it knows exactly why men argue over the right way to serve it.
California – Carne Asada Fries
San Diego put carne asada on fries and the whole Southwest followed. Feels like it has always existed. It has not been around that long at all.
Massachusetts – Chocolate Chip Cookie
Chocolate blocks introduced butter cakes to a small hotel and the result was chocolate chips everywhere. Most of the eaten cookies on the international stage started by total accident.
Louisiana – Bananas Foster
Butter, sugar, rum and bananas cooked tableside with fire involved. Started as a way to deal with too many bananas and became one of the most dramatic desserts anyone has ever watched being made.
Tennessee – Nashville Hot Chicken
Started as an act of revenge. The chicken was made unbearably spicy on purpose and somehow that became the thing people drive across the city for. Lines at the original spot never went away.
Arizona – Chimichanga
A burrito fell into hot oil by accident and instead of throwing it out someone put it on the menu. Now it is everywhere and nobody thinks twice about it being deep fried.
New Jersey – Green Bean Casserole
Canned soup, frozen green beans, crispy onions on top. A test kitchen recipe that ended up on Thanksgiving tables across the entire country every single November without fail.
Hawaii – Loco Moco
Someone asked for something cheap and filling and got rice, a burger patty, egg, and gravy all stacked together. Hawaii’s most comforting meal came from one simple request at a small local grill.
Nebraska – Reuben Sandwich
Corned red meat, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Russian dressing on rye bread are pressed to simmer. Made in Omaha, it can now be found in every restaurant across the country, never changed as it was in no way necessary.
Alabama – White Barbecue Sauce
Everybody used tomato. Alabama used mayonnaise and vinegar instead and the result works better on smoked chicken than most people expect before they actually try it for the first time.
