Locals Reveal Montana’s Most Overlooked Travel Gems

The process of searching for the ideal escape can sometimes seem like a juggling act between desiring an epic adventure and seeking a moment to unwind and have some air. There is something special about the places that are not on the cover of every travel brochure, despite the fact the major parks are well worth the visit. Montana is laden with such silent spots where the air seems a little colder and the pace is slowed enough to take notice.

Seliš Ksanka Ql̓ispé Dam, Polson 

This grandiose building overlooks the Flathead River near Polson with historical and tribal pride. The overhang is an amazing sight of the water falling down through the rocky canyon beneath.

Sluice Boxes State Park

This steep canyon is located south of Belt, with towering limestone cliffs and the traces of ancient mining railroads. It is an excellent place to be in when one is interested in a bit of history as well as hiking.

Miracle Of America Museum, Polson

This enormous collection, in Polson, is a testament to all the vintage Americana that one can imagine. It has old tractors and military planes, which run over just about every inch of its vast estate.

Ross Creek Cedars Scenic Area, Libby

In the extreme northwest these ancient trees form a forest canopy, which seems a natural cathedral. There have been reports of some of these western red cedars growing more than 500 years.

Rock City, Valier

These weird sandstone hoodoos, which grow out of the prairie in unexpected forms, are hidden away down towards Valier. It is a silent, uninhabited space in which the geological history of the plains is very much felt.

Ringing Rocks, Butte

These unusual boulders are found outside of Butte and do chime like bells when struck with a light hammer. It is a geologic wonder that has left people who visit there puzzled, yet amazed.

Archie Bray Art Center, Helena

The old brickyard of Helena is now a global center for ceramic art and sculpture lovers. The grounds incorporate outdoor art that is rotated, and each visit is a new experience.

Medicine Rocks State Park

This southeastern gem is characterized by its strange sandstone pillars, which stand out of the plains. It is believed and recorded that it was a holy place, and the silence of the region today leads to that conviction.

Kootenai Falls

When most people go to the Great Lakes, Kootenai Falls and its swinging bridge are a close-up view of local power. The water that flows through the old rocks is magnificent in blue hues.

The night sky is very bright and clear in this area with very minimal light pollution. It could be among the most appropriate places to relax and see the size of the universe.
