People Are Cancelling Trips After Learning This Travel Rule

The federal identification law took millions of American travellers by surprise, with missed flights and hasty last-minute cancellations of trips; it was a frenzy around the country. The much-awaited rule came effective on May 2025.

The Rule Explained

According to the TSA, Congress passed the REAL ID Act in 2005, effective May 7, 2025. As per the law, all travellers must provide documents to provide documents that comply with their identification at all domestic security points in the United States.

Spot Your ID

Passengers are obliged to present a valid U.S passport or other TSA-approved identification documents unless they provide the REAL-ID complaint drivers license bearing a golden/black star in the upper left-hand side corner as per  Department of Homeland Security declaration.

Checkpoint Chaos

The implementation of the law resulted in mass chaos over confirmed missed flights because of non-compliant licenses at TSA security checkpoints. According to TSA data, over 5000 weekly refusals at checkpoints during the third quarter of 2025 were reported by VisaVerge.

Expired IDs Out

To the sheer dismay of thousands of unsuspecting travellers, the grace period was quietly wiped out, and non-renewed state-issued IDs were not considered at the checkpoints.

Compliance Gap Widens

Georgia and Florida excelled with 99 per cent of residents complying with REAL ID, while  Alabama was 33 per cent at the time of enforcement. After coming into effect, North Carolina and Illinois have less than 52% compliance as per an article in CNN.

The $45 Fix

TSA.gov declared that ConfirmID will start on February 1, 2026. Valueless travellers (those who arrive without being offered acceptable identification) pay a non-refundable fee of 45 dollars covering a period of a decade to travel within, although TSA warns that they should expect to spend an additional screening time of up to thirty minutes.

Kids Stay Clear

As for the national security of the country, all adults who visit the TSA security gate in the country must have a fully compliant, unexpired identification document. Travellers below the age of 18 are exempt from this law, according to ABC News.

Digital IDs Accepted

To convey compliant travellers with a safe and convenient modern identification, Apple Wallet has been adopted for the use of digital driver’s license by fourteen states as of November 2025, according to TSA.gov

Get Compliant Now

Both the ABC News and the TSA.gov assure passengers that they can make an in-person appearance at their local DMV and provide evidence of identification, residence, and legal status. The preparation may require up to three weeks, and government-issued, temporary paper cards that are needed to prepare are not accepted at the checkpoints.
