The Base-to-Peak Giant
Denali stands on a level area, which provides an unobstructed view of the entire mountain and Everest reaches a higher elevation than Denali because Everest’s mountain structure extends from its base to its peak at a greater size than Denali.
Extreme Vertical Rise
Denali rises to an elevation of 18,000 feet which reaches 3.5 miles above its base. The mountain’s vertical ascent creates weather patterns which result in the development of dangerous storms that can persist for multiple weeks.
Permanent Snow and Ice
The park contains glaciers which occupy approximately one million acres of space. The massive “rivers of ice” flow continuously which results in their ability to carve deep valleys while maintaining the mountain’s snowy appearance throughout the summer season.
The High Altitude Challenge
Denali appears taller than Everest because it sits at lower elevation and the atmosphere at the poles has reduced density which causes Denali’s summit air pressure to create a sensation of higher altitude than its actual height of 20,310 feet.
A Six-Million Acre Wilderness
The park area exceeds the total land area of New Hampshire state. The park permits only one access road which protects most of its natural terrain from any human disturbance.
The “Big Five” Wildlife
Visitors come to see the park’s famous residents grizzly bears, wolves, moose caribou and Dall sheep. The animals move freely throughout the tundra which lacks any fences or boundaries.
No Private Cars Allowed
Visitors to the park must use designated transportation because their personal vehicles create environmental damage and a specialized bus system provides a transportation option which protects both air quality and animal habitats by minimizing vehicle traffic.
The Moving Mountain
Denali continues to grow in height and tectonic plate movement causes the mountain to rise at a rate of 1 millimeter annually. The mountain experiences continuous movement because of its small height increase.
Dynamic Tundra Landscapes
The park contains ground areas which remain frozen throughout the entire year except for its permafrost regions. The forest experiences a “shrunken” appearance which results in trees becoming small and twisted because their roots are blocked from deep growth into the ice.
