Royal Caribbean has introduced a structural design shift on its newest ships to solve a long-standing frustration for families and groups. The cruise line developed its connecting cabin system because it needed to solve two main problems which had disturbed guests during their entire history of cruising. The Icon and Star of the Seas introduced this “genius” layout change to create private foyers which connect two adjacent rooms for passenger comfort.
The End of the Flimsy Interior Door

Traditional connecting cabins rely on a thin, internal door between rooms that often lets in light and noise. The new design establishes a hallway connection point which allows walls between rooms to stay completely sealed for soundproof protection.
Creation of a Private Foyer

The ships now feature a pair of heavy exterior doors that can be closed to seal off a small section of the hallway. The design creates a private suite entrance which connects two separate rooms for use as one space.
Seamless Movement for Families

Parents can keep their individual cabin doors open or unlocked within the safety of the closed exterior doors. Children can access their parents’ room through their own room without needing to pass through shared spaces.
Improved Soundproofing

The wall no longer has a weak point because the traditional interior door has been removed. Passengers no longer need to worry about hearing their neighbors’ television or conversations through the thin connecting gap.
Increased Flexibility

The layout accommodates various types of travelers who require different travel setups. Friends sharing the space can enjoy complete privacy by closing their individual cabin doors. Families who want to create a shared area between members must close their outer door.
Better Use of Floor Space

Internal connecting doors take up essential wall space which should be available for desk and couch placement. The hallway connection point creates additional space which makes the cabin area appear less cluttered and more open.
Enhanced Security for Children

The locked outer hallway door provides parents with security because their children stay inside a protected space. The system stops toddlers from entering main ship areas while they travel between various rooms.
A Solution for Larger Groups

The setup provides a shared “front porch” space which grandparents and grandkids can use for family time together. The system creates a social space where people can gather together but also provides them with private areas for personal time.
Addressing the “Light Leak” Problem

Internal doors have gaps at their bottom section which allow light to enter the room during nighttime when neighbors turn on their lamps. The new exterior door system creates a complete blackout environment which enables users to sleep more effectively.
Icon Class Innovation

The feature exists only on the Icon of the Seas and Star of the Seas at present. The design establishes industry standards which demonstrate how contemporary ship architecture has developed to better serve family vacationers.
